William Canori brings distance range to Stanford

A 4:23.68 in the 500 free is quick. The 9:07.54 in the 1000 and 15:18.71 in the mile tell the fuller story.

Stanford’s men have their first verbal commitment for 2028, and it comes from a swimmer who likes the long races. William Canori, of Pleasanton Seahawks and Marin Academy, has committed to the Cardinal.

His short course yard bests run from 4:23.68 in the 500 free to 9:07.54 in the 1000 and 15:18.71 in the 1650. The 500 is the quickest read on his speed. The two longer swims show how much distance work is already in his repertoire.

In our look back with those three times, Stanford came in at #7 overall and in the Good group. The 4:23.68 in the 500 free did the most work in that result: Match placed it in Stanford’s Contributor range.

It is tempting to treat a distance recruit as a mile time and move on. Canori’s announcement is more interesting than that. Stanford has a first piece for its class, and he arrives with three events to keep an eye on between now and fall 2028.

For this look back, we entered the published short course yard times on October 20, 2026 against the 2025–26 roster snapshot.
