Common questions about college swimming programs

How many colleges have swim teams?

More than 1,000 college programs across NCAA Division I, II, and III sponsor varsity swimming. On The Board tracks the current, active programs and lets you browse them by division and by state.

What's the difference between D1, D2, and D3 swimming?

All three are NCAA varsity divisions. Division I includes the largest athletic programs; Division III does not offer athletic scholarships. Speed overlaps more than families expect — the fastest D3 and D2 programs beat many D1 rosters — so it is worth researching real roster times, not just the division label.

How do I find swimming colleges in my state?

Use the state directories above. Each state page lists the active D1, D2, and D3 programs in that state, with the team or teams each school fields and its conference.

Does this directory tell me which schools fit my swimmer?

No. This is the complete program list, built for browsing and orientation. To rank schools around your swimmer's times, academics, and preferences, use Match Me — a separate tool.
